About FKA
Foundation Knowledge Academy is founded in 2026 by Mr Kenn Lau, a teacher who cares about passionately about delivering results. After spending more than a decade working as an English teacher and administrator in renowned local schools in Hong Kong, and gaining a thorough understanding the inner workings of the education system and examination, FKA was founded to help equip students to truly master the system in English learning through delivering a content-rich curriculum in an engaging and lively manner that facilitates factual retention, in the spirit of the Core Knowledge curriculum developed by Professor E.D. Hirsh.
With bachelor and master degrees in education and administration, along with an upbringing in international schools in Hong Kong and British boarding schools, I am well positioned to instill in my students with global perspectives.

What is Core Curriculum?
Core Curriculum is a curriculum designed by University of Virginia Professor E.D. Hirsch which is content-focused, as opposed to skill-focused. Professor Hirsch's education philosophy is that high-functioning individuals adept to the needs of the world regularly draws on background knowledge in order to foster understanding and engender comprehension, instead of drawing upon learned skills (e.g. identification of main topic, able to recognise keywords in texts).
Core Curriculum is designed to counter misguided trends in modern education, as it increasingly emphasises skill-based learning, which according to Professor Hirsch, does not effectively prepare students to handle the needs of the modern world. Research increasingly shows that reading skills taught simply cannot be freely transferrable between texts, and without background knowledge, no amount of reading skills can adequately compensate.
Tuition and Lesson Structure
FKA runs a curriculum based on Core Knowledge materials. Each group is made up of two grade levels and each session lasts 70 minutes. Each lesson will be structure as such:
1. Main subject materials (50 minutes)
2. Quiz (5 minutes)
3. Group tutorial on school materials (15 minutes)
(Actual schedule may vary according to the nature of the lesson.)
All students should aim to attend FKA twice a week. There will be two separate cycles each week. Students may choose their own combination of days according to their own schedules.
FAQ
1. Who is HKAFK for?
To put simply, HKAFK courses are for parents who want their child to achieve a real and practical advantage by enriching their background knowledge in the world, the only proven way that consistently raises English language scores. Students from HKAFK will leave each lesson satisfied that they have learned something fascinating and relevant about the world which will benefit them in deep and lasting way, from tackling future examination questions to engaging in meaningful conversations with adults during social gatherings.
2. How is HKAFK different from other education centres?
HKAFK utilises the philosophy and materials of the Core Knowledge (CK) curriculum. It equips students with with carefully selected foundational knowledge from different fields that would fully equip students to excel in English learning, especially in reading comprehension section. Other education agencies seek to teach student discrete reading skills, which research has shown disregards actual learning processes, and are thus ineffective.
2. Is the curriculum free? If so, why should students sign up for HKAFK lessons?
Yes, the CK curriculum is completely free of charge! You may find many of their materials online. In fact, many curricula in the world are free of charge. However, it is the delivery of the materials that sets HKAFK apart. Students get to experience a content packed lesson in a fun and interactive way from an experienced teacher, which makes all the difference. Our public libraries provide a wealth of free knowledge to all citizens - but without proper guidance, how many people actually benefit?
3. Why is each group limited to 7 people? Can you take more?
Two reasons. Firstly, small group learning is much more effective than individual learning or large group learning. Having experienced one-on-one tutorials both as a teacher and a student, the lack of interaction with peers can render the lesson extremely dry and tedious. You are also unable to benefit from the unique perspectives of others.
Secondly, EDB requires all education institutes teaching 8 or more students or 20 or more students per day to register for a license. In order to successfully register for a license, many requirements irrelevant to education must be met (e.g. building codes, fire hazards). So, no I cannot take more.
Rest assured, this will be done in the future when it is time for HKAFK to expand!
4. Will you be teaching critical thinking skills?
Yes and no. According to research, critical thinking is not a skill that can be transferred between different disciplines. People who exhibit the the most critical thinking traits are always already experts in their fields with a strong grasp of knowledge matters. Critical thinking comes naturally from the acquisition of background knowledge. Students who have completed courses with HKAFK will be equipped with background knowledge of a expertly selected range of topics that would naturally lead to high-functioning critical thinkers.
5. Will you give discounts?
No, the lessons are fairly priced.
However, any existing students from families with financial distress may apply in writing briefly detailing their situation and request. Any request would be at the discretion of the Academy.
